Second Grade Educational Journey
Our second grade class has embarked on an educational journey overflowing with excitement and fun. Instead of a typical book report, we redesigned cereal boxes summarizing our favorite Language Arts stories. For our geometry unit in math, we constructed marshmallow and toothpick figures. Our “My Plate” musical performance kept us active while we learned about healthy foods. To celebrate February as “Friendship” month, each student in our class contributed to a “Friendship Fruit Salad” and then served one another. In March, as part of “Read Across America”, we paid tribute to Dr. Seuss by sharing many of his books and dressing up in character. We also ventured into the interesting “World of Dinosaurs”. Our activities included creating dinosaur dioramas, performing a “Dinosaur Dance” for Open House, and a field trip to explore the Natural History Museum. Our class is looking forward to see what exciting activities await them as our educational journey continues.

First Grade Spring Musical Program
On the mornings of March 25 and March 26, the two first grade classes presented a spring musical program that resulted from a collaboration between their music teacher, Ms. Arus Andreassian, and their Armenian teacher, Mrs. Takoush Nalbandian. The students were very excited and enthusiastic to perform in front of school families, and they did a wonderful job of putting a smile on their audience's faces. The students' hard work was evident to all in attendance. The audience consisted of proud parents and grandparents who were touched and impressed by our students' singing and recitation. As a school, we appreciate the efforts of our talented first graders and the dedication of our faculty members, Ms. Andreassian and Mrs. Nalbandian.

"Kaleidoscope"
On the weekend of March 20th, the art and dance sections of our Visual & Performing Arts department collaborated to put on the show: "Kaleidoscope." Art students from 4th through 12th grade were able to showcase their work in the annual exhibit. Many different themes and styles were explored, including some pieces that commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The Art III/IV class, in particular, depicted different portraits of various generations as survivors of the massacres, with a large mixed-media pomegranate symbolizing the Armenian spirit and identity. As is the case each year, our dance students impressed audiences with their skill and energy, infusing dances of different genres with Armenian cultural pieces and overtones. The dancers gave it their all on two nights to a packed auditorium. We appreciate the hard work of our students, as well as the tutelage and leadership of Ms. Anne-Marie Chaghlassian and Mrs. Erica Robson who were indispensable in making this special event a success.

Faculty Member's NASA Achievement Award
High school honors physics teacher Dr. Raymond Ellyin (AGBU MDS graduate of Class of '96) has been nominated for the NASA Achievement Award for his contribution as the Mission Assurance Manager of the first JPL CubeSat Mission to Launch off of the International Space Station. The Radiometer Atmospheric CubeSat Experiment (RACE) Mission Assurance (MA) Program faced countless challenges throughout the evolution of the project. RACE was one of the first two CubeSat Missions that JPL has ever managed. The complexity of this mission included, but was not limited to, oversight required during design, fabrication, integration and test of every subsystem assembly while facing challenges associated with the development of novel CubeSat technology. Additionally, the program faced the difficulty of having to replace two of its project managers while partnering and interfacing with multiple centers and institutions. The Mission Assurance Management Team (MAMT), from Phase A through delivery, oversaw many MA disciplines including: Systems Safety, Hardware Quality Assurance, Software Quality Assurance, Electronics Parts Engineering, Circuit and Systems Reliability, Environmental Requirements Engineering, Inspection Reporting (IR), Problem Failure Reporting (PFR), and Risk Assessment. Under the leadership of Dr. Ellyin, the MAMT proactively sought the most experienced engineers and leaders for each discipline of the Mission Assurance Team. With this qualified leadership in place, along with a technical staff of over 25 individuals, the MAMT participated in every aspect of the Project, Flight System and Payload development. These assessments were communicated to Project and Line organizations to allow risk-informed decision making while remaining consistent with the Project’s tailored requirements and its Class D risk posture. RACE has been a pioneer in helping pave the road and allowing JPL to penetrate the CubeSat Space Industry.
In light of his heavy responsibilities and commitments with JPL, we appreciate having Dr. Ellyin as a teacher and mentor for our seniors who wish to pursue the science and technology fields as a career.

The Land of Third Grade!
Third grade is an adventure! Once you arrive, you can’t help but use your imagination to create and learn. First and second grade has answered the question of “what,” but in third grade, we delve deeper into the land of “how” and “why.” The discovery of “how” and “why” not only encompasses math, social studies, and science; but also in the amazing land of writing.
In the reading comprehension venture, we explore what the text is truly telling us by using skills such as: cause and effect, compare and contrast, main ideas, and details. We enhance our vocabulary by learning how to associate unfamiliar words with context clues.
Math becomes exciting and challenging. Third graders put on their critical thinking caps as problems are solved using various methods. Digging deeper into learning multiplication becomes a journey of joy by implementing tricks, games, and songs to grasp what used to seem impossible.
Adventures in science take us across the globe as we study animals and their habitats. We then strap ourselves in as we explore outer space, reading, researching and analyzing. Before the year ends we discover the properties of matter and the wonders of light and sound.
In social studies we explore many different communities… some dating back to 1,500 years ago.
Character development is an essential part of the third grade learning process. Not only do the students learn academically, but also they learn to appreciate each other. It is in third grade that valuable relationships are formed amongst peers.
Jump into this amazing Journey:

Carla Garapedian Presents to High School Students
Award-winning documentary filmmaker and anchor for BBC World News, Dr. Carla Garapedian, graciously set aside time to address our 9th-11th grade students on the afternoon of April 15, 2015. Our students listened with rapt attention as Dr. Garapedian described the efforts of the Armenian Film Foundation and encouraged discussion regarding the relevance of commemorating the centennial of the Armenian Genocide. Further, she introduced to our students an opportunity for aspiring directors to enter a competition by creating a short original film based on eyewitness testimonies of thirteen Genocide survivors. We thank Dr. Garapedian, Dr. Silva Karayan, and Garen Mirzaian for their time in reaching out to our high school students and presenting them with a unique and memorable experience as the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide approaches.

Preschool's Participation in Genocide Commemoration Events
Beginning in September of 2014, all Artemis Nazarian Preschool students participated in monthly assemblies dedicated to the Armenian Genocide Centennial Commemoration held on or near the 24th of each month . They learned about Armenian culture, life, music, art, and much more. Some of the students' artistic work is displayed in the preschool playground. During the month of April, preschoolers learned about the universal “forget-me-not” symbol of the Centennial Commemoration, and each student painted a flower/symbol which is displayed on its special corner in the preschool playground. They also made “forget-me-not” cookies and decorated them with the special colors.
We are proud to announce that preschool students collectively participated in the Genocide Commemoration assembly and ceremonies held this morning, Thursday, April 23rd. The event began with the Pledge of Allegiance, prayer, and the AGBU anthem, followed by a brief presentation about the history of the Armenian people and their survival. The students then were presented with pictures from life in the old days as well as colorful pictures from present lives of Armenian children. The theme of rebirth and celebration was presented by introducing the children to Armenian costumes and a graceful Armenian dance performed by the Blue class students. All the students also sang a few Armenian traditional songs.
Afterwards, they marched to the quad area, each holding flowers brought from home and placed them at the Genocide Memorial Monument in a solemn atmosphere.
