On Friday, January 30, six of our advanced art students had the honor of exhibiting their artwork at CSUN's College of Arts gallery. The artists, Cynthia Petrossian, Monica Khachatrian, Christine Keshishyan, John Kayacan, Nazely Hartoonian, and Arinnae Kurdian, had their works displayed amongst those from every high school in the San Fernando Valley. Our technology and photography teacher, Mr. Fadi Beyrouthy, responded to the invitation by submitting his own photography piece to the High School Teachers portion of the show. CSUN's High School Art Invitational sparks inspiration in everyone who participates and attends. We are very proud of our students who had the fruits of their creative labor so prominently displayed in this exhibit and appreciative of Ms. Anne-Marie Chaghlassian's continual mentoring.

The Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC), a premier transportation hub, offers a unique variety of transit, dining, retail, and entertainment options in one convenient location. On January 30, a dozen Engineering & Technology focus group students explored the fiber optic and computer networking infrastructure of this state-of-the-art facility. Students observed how the systems works and is integrated for specific functions in behind-the-scenes tours. After a complimentary lunch, Mr. Robert Amirian provided our students with a lecture and question/answer session to help them assimilate the information they took in that day. We thank him for his time and effort in helping to make this field trip a reality and are grateful for the continued dedication on the part of Mr. Fadi Beyrouthy in instructing and mentoring our focus group students.

Kindergarten students celebrated the life and achievements of African-American Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (1929-1968), by gathering in the Kindergarten courtyard to sing a very special tribute song, "Man Named King." In honor of the late humanitarian, students learned about his life and work over the weeks preceding the holiday and were eager and excited to perform for parents and friends. Students also learned about Dr. King's struggles against racism, his love for humanity, courage, and to "have a dream," just as Dr. King did.

For over fifteen years, AGBU Marie Manoogian School in Argentina has participated in an exchange program with our school, alternating years of visiting and hosting. On the evening of Wednesday, January 21, sixteen students from our sister school along with their chaperon, Miriam Bogossian, arrived in Los Angeles to spend a few weeks interacting with our community and immersing themselves in US culture. Students have been attending classes, such as English, Armenian, history, computer/technology, art, dance, and more, as well as being engaged in educational and sightseeing field trips. They spent a day at the Getty Center, Universal Studios, and Six Flags in addition to other well-known LA landmarks, and they supported our sports teams at games. Disneyland will be one of their final stops before saying goodbye to our school community on Monday, February 9. We sincerely thank our host families for going above and beyond in making our guests feel welcome, and we thank Houry Khechoumian for her passionate involvement with this program over the many years--we are sure that these past few weeks will yield a lifetime of memories.

It's been a busy month in our class! We celebrated the 100th day of school, made streams to coincide with our science curriculum, and enjoyed Valentine's Day, to name a few highlights. Our fantastic first graders have been working hard thus far during the school year. In addition to daily academic and interactive activities, they make time for some fun! On the 100th day of school, they enjoyed guest speakers, parent readers, and lunch with the teacher--always encouraged and welcomed by our eager first graders. The children have been happily and actively engaged! Learning is fun!

Hundreds of members of our school community, including students, board members, faculty, staff, as well as supportive parents, students, alumni and prospective families attended and enjoyed the successful Annual Open House, which took place on Saturday, February 21. Student ambassadors were on hand to help guide families to the many achievements and talents of our students during the Open House. There were different areas of the school for parents to visit: preschool-12th grade classrooms and activities, special outdoor and indoor table displays of student work and clubs, hands on science experiments, educational competitions, student performances in the school auditorium (drama, debate, Armenian performance, dance, orchestra), soccer games, the school garden, and much more. All visitors were provided with the latest information about the programs we offer. The events of the day culminated with a fellowship lunch in school cafeteria, while attendees completed a brief survey with our student ambassadors using Google Chromebooks. We appreciate the hard work of all of our departments, volunteer parents, students, and administration in putting together this enjoyable event and contributing to its success.

On Monday, February 23, a Motivational Media Assembly was held by Dave Cornett for our middle and high school students. Motivational Media Assemblies (MMA) is the international leader in all-school “assembly” events. Started in 1985, MMA productions have been viewed by over 51 million students in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Taiwan. Featuring clips from today’s most popular movies, music videos, and incredible sports footage, MMA shows are generating the highest of student responses to character education and responsibility-improvement messages. Both assemblies, “Be The One” and “Live Out Loud,” were truly inspiring. A 3-screen DVD video-wall production was used in tying in movie scenes with everyday issues people face. Our students were captivated by some of the powerful messages: “Life only gets better when we choose to get better. We can watch life happen or make it happen." "We need a new kind of leader, one who will champion all people, celebrate all people, and bring out the best in all people.” We would like to thank Dave Cornett, for presenting this wonderful assembly for our students. We also appreciate the efforts of our school counselor, Mrs. Irina Stepanyan, for bringing such an innovative, relevant, and powerful assembly to our students. We look forward to inviting Mr. Cornett back in the future.

Our school had its annual Science Fair on Tuesday, February 24, 2015. The event was an opportunity for about two hundred students from grades five to nine to apply the scientific method in conducting independent research. The results of each student's research were presented and evaluated in the Nazarian Center gymnasium, where their presentations were displayed. As part of the judging process, students were interviewed to determine scientific merit. Those who had used the scientific method properly and who had demonstrated thoroughness in their studies were awarded and are advancing to compete in the Armenian Engineers and Scientists of America (AESA) Science Olympiad on March 15. Sixteen students with top science projects at the AESA will participate in the LA County Science Fair on March 27. We thank our science department, Science Fair coordinator Anna Mkrtchyan, and volunteer judges. We wish our students the best as they move on in the competition.
