On Tuesday, November 4, our school's Agajanian Auditorium was open to the community as a polling place. At the same time, our kindergarten students were taught about elections, campaigning, ballots, and voting (age-appropriately, of course). Students were allowed to vote for their favorite color in the first of many opportunities to participate in decision-making both here at school and later on in civic life.

Congratulating Our Girls Varsity Volleyball Team!
We are proud to announce that our girls varsity volleyball team ended the season tied for first place in the Westside League, making them co-champions. Their overall record was 10-8, and it was 7-1 specifically for League games, which is more of a challenge. They will move on to compete in the CIF playoffs. We congratulate our girls and their coach, Linda Sirkedzhyan, and assistant coach, Michelle Maloyan, and wish them the best in upcoming games.

Չորեքշաբթի, Նոյեմբեր 5-ի երեկոյեան, ՀԲԸՄ Մանուկեան-Տեմիրճեան վարժարանի Աղաճանեան սրահին մէջ, շուրջ 400 ներկաներ վայելեցին իր տեսակին մէջ բացառիկ գեղարուեստական երեկոյ մը, կատարողութեամբ վարժարանիս 4-րդ դասարանի եւ Միջնակարգ-Երկրորդականի երեսնեակ մը աշակերտներու: Այդ օր հայ մշակոյթն էր ի պատուի, որ շուրջ մէկ ժամ ներկայացուեցաւ խօսքով, ասմունքով, երգով, պարով եւ նուագախումբով, երեւան բերելով մեր աշակերտութեան թաքնուած տաղանդները եւ հայրենասիրական ոգին:
Երեկոն տօնական էր: Նախ ելոյթ ունեցաւ դպրոցին նուագախումբը, ղեկավարութեամբ Տիկ. Քրիստինա Խոջոյեանի: Ապա, Պրն. Հրաչ Սեփեթճեան կատարեց բացման խօսքը եւ սահիկներու ցուցադրութեամբ մեծարեց Տիկ. Վարդուհի Գոճայեանը, վարժարանիս մատուցած երկար տարիներու իր ծառայութիւններուն համար, որմէ ետք խօսքը փոխանցեց վարժարանիս Հոգաբարձութեան նախկին անդամ, հասարակական եւ միութենական աշխոյժ գործիչ Տոքթ. Վիգէն Կիւլվարդեանին: Վերջինս, որպէս Տիկին Վարդուհիի երկար տարիներու գործակիցը՝ մանաւանդ որպէս դպրոցական «Փառատօն»ներու կազմակերպիչներ, վեր հանեց մեծարեալին շնորհքները որպէս հաղորդավար, դերասան, կազմակերպիչ եւ առողջ դատողութեան մարմնացում:

Յուզիչ ու գօտեպնդիչ էին Տիկին Վարդուհիին սրտի եւ շնորհակալութեան խօսքերը: Ան յիշեց դպրոցական աշխատանքային տարիները, եւ շնորհակալութիւն յայտնեց ըրեն ընձեռուած այս առիթին համար:
Յայտագրին երկրորդ մասով, աշակերտութեան կողմէ 40 վայրկեան անընդհատ հնչեց հայերէն խօսքը, հայ երգն ու պարը, ասմունքը: Սրահը մագնիսացած հետեւեցաւ գեղարուեստական բացառիկ յայտագրին, ուր ականետեսն ու ունկնդիրը եղան հայ անուանի բանաստեղծներու գործերէն հատուածներու, զուգերգի ու մեներգի, պարի ու մենապարի. եւ այս բոլորը իրարու շաղկապուած թատերական գեղեցիկ պատկերներով:

John Kayacan's Photo Featured
John Kayacan, one of our 12th grade students, has been receiving accolades for his photography for several years now--a noteworthy accomplishment given the fact that he has yet to graduate high school in June. Regarding one of his photos recently featured by the Los Angeles Times on their website, John comments:
"The shoot stood out to me. Just a little boy behind a truck with his face painted like a skull — something so scary seemed so innocent."

Middle School Science
In Karoline Rostamiani's class, a different science theme is highlighted each month. November's theme is marine biology. The students are surrounded by classroom decoration and items that align with this theme, and every day some time is set aside for related discussion. Preserved marine animals and shells are on display for students to look at, touch, and learn about. Currently, the display includes a puffer fish, a sea urchin, starfish, seahorses, different types of shells from different regions of the world, a shark jaw, and shark teeth. The specimens all come from different countries to which they are native. The idea behind this endeavor is to get students excited about science topics that are not covered in textbooks. To further reinforce these experiences, on November 13, the 7th grade class went on a field trip to Newport Beach for the ExplorOcean program. In the future months, the classroom theme will continue to change, and students will be engaged in discovery-related activities.

Car Seat Safety
Children's Hospital Los Angeles representatives were on campus Friday, November 14th, for an informative presentation on car seat safety, which was held in the Agajanian Auditorium. Whether parents in attendance had a newborn, toddler, child, or teen (fourteen years of age), it was interesting to note that a seat of some sort was necessary for safety and protection. Did you know that car seats have an expiration date of six months from the date of manufacture? Many valuable facts were presented and questions were answered. Thank you, CHLA, for treating kids better!

Performing at a Talent Show
On November 14th, the AGBU Manoogian- Demirdjian School Glee Club, which consists of girls from second to fifth grade, performed at St. Peter’s Got Talent first annual talent show. The girls’ singing was wonderful and exciting, as indicated by the audience’s appreciative applause. All in attendance were very impressive. There were also other AGBU Manoogian-Demirdjian school students participating in the talent show, as well as students from different schools. We are proud of all of our performing students and the manner in which they represent our school .

Human Rights Activist, Fethiye Cetin, Visits Our School
On November 17, human rights activist and lawyer, Fethiye Cetin, visited our school as a guest lecturer for our high school students.
Երկուշաբթի, Նոյեմբեր 17-ին, վարժարանիս սրահին մէջ տեղի ունեցաւ իր տեսակին մէջ եզակի հանդիպում մը թուրք մտաւորական, մարդկային իրաւունքներու պաշտպան Տիկին Ֆէթհիէ Չէթինի հետ: Ներկայ էին 10րդ, 11րդ եւ 2րդ դասարանի աշակերտները, որոնք տարիներ շարունակ լսած ու կարդացած էին Հրանդ Տինքի եւ Ֆեթհիէ Չէթինի մասին:
Տիկին Չէթինին կ'ընկերակցէր Պոլսահայ Միութեան Մշակութային Յանձնախումբի ատենապետ Յովհաննէս Աւետիքեան: Հայերէնի ուսուցչուհի Տիկ. Ռոզալին Մատոյեան հանդիպումը վարեց թրքերէն, անգլերէն եւ հայերէն լեզուներով: Տիկին Չէթին կը պատասխանէր աշակերտներուն կողմէ նախապէս պատրաստուած հարցումներուն, Տոքթ. Աւելի քան 45 վայրկեան Տիկին Չէթին խօսեցաւ իր հայ մեծ մօր, անոր ապրումներուն, ապա՝ իր ապրումներուն, Ցեղասպանութեան, Հրանդ Տինքի, Թուրքիոյ կառավարութեան ներկայի կողմնորոշումներուն մասին: Աշակերտութեան հետ խիստ շահեկան հարց-պատասխանէ ետք, մեկնելէ առաջ վարժարանիս տնօրէնութեան կողմէ նուէր ստացաւ Ցեղասպանութեան 90-ամեակին առիթով մեր վարժարանին պատրաստած գիրքէն օրինակ մը:

FIRST LEGO League Robotics Competition
On Sunday, November 23, the Nazarian Center gymnasium and DHS middle/high school building were alive with visitors, excitement, and healthy competition. Our school hosted the qualifying tournament for the FIRST LEGO League Robotics Competition. A total of twenty-two teams competed in various categories that tested their ability to design practical, creative, and functional robots with the ability to successfully execute programmed commands for specific goals. What is the future of learning? That was the question students explored this year. We congratulate our Robo Titans for scoring in the top five in the robot design category. In appreciation for five years of dedicated service to the robotics program, the school administration awarded Mr. Levon Keshishian with a plaque. Finally, we thank Mr. Fadi Beyrouthy for planning this year's competition and mentoring our team.

Doves of Peace and Guest Speaker Dr. Garbis Der Yeghiayan
On Monday, November 24, students of all ages were involved in Armenian Genocide Centennial commemoration activities. For the elementary, Father Shnork Demirjian addressed our students with a message of peace and gratitude, and our older students interacted with Mashdots College President, Dr. Garbis Der Yeghiayan.

2nd Graders Appreciate Firefighters and Police Officers
From our 2nd grade teachers: a very special "thank you" to our 2nd grade homeroom parents for helping our children realize the "art of giving thanks", by warmly welcoming a firefighter as well as a police officer to visit with 2nd graders today. Students were extremely excited and showed great interest during their individual presentations explaining the importance of their positions and role in our community. Both departments were presented with beautiful gift baskets filled with goodies, as well as individual cards written by our students, expressing their deep appreciation and gratitude in keeping communities safe. It was a wonderful learning experience for our 2nd graders!

Students Participated in Divine Liturgy
On the morning of Sunday, November 30, eight of our students participated in the Divine Liturgy at St. Leon Armenian Cathedral in Burbank under the guidance of music teacher Kristina Khodjoian. Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church, honored Dr. Thomas Lee of Children's Hospital Los Angeles, who joined the Armenian Eyecare Project on a mission to Yerevan. While there, Dr. Lee helped diagnose and treat an aggressive blinding disease, which affects one third of premature infants in Armenia.

Thanksgiving Season Fundraising
Displaying the perfect balance of professionalism and entertainment, the 2014 Senior Fashion Show, held on November 21 in the Nazarian Center gymnasium, was a success. Through formal and casual looks spanning the decades, the audience remained enthusiastic for the duration of the evening. The chemistry among the senior class was apparent and heartwarming as they took their first steps on the catwalk and into their final year at AGBU MDS.
Traditionally, the major fundraising effort of the Thanksgiving season has been focused on contributing to Armenia Fund. This year, the tragic situation of Syrian Armenians prompted the school administration and Armenian department to consider dividing the proceeds of all fundraising, including the Fashion Show, between Armenia Fund and Syrian Armenian Relief Fund (SARF). On Thanksgiving day, $11, 047.40 was presented to Armenia Fund at the annual telethon.
We are grateful to be part of such a dynamic and generous community, banding together each year to help those in situations less fortunate.

Armenia Tree Project Prepares Our 10th Graders for Summer Visit
Չորեքշաբթի, Դեկտեմբեր 3-ին, Armenia Tree Project-ի ներկայացուցիչ Տիկ. Անահիտ Ղարիբեան հանդիպում ունեցաւ Յունիս 2015-ին Հայաստան ուխտագնացութեան մեկնող Հ.Բ.Ը.Մ. Մանուկեան-Տեմիրճեան Վարժարանի 10-րդ դասարանի աշակերտութեան հետ, ներկայացնելով կազմակերպութիւնը եւ անոր կատարած աշխատանքները Հայաստանի մէջ: Հանդիպումը առիթ եղաւ երկուստէք ծանօթացումի, մանաւանդ որ մեր աշակերտները արդէն քանիերորդ տարին ըլլալով ծառատունկ կը կատարեն Հայաստանի մէջ Armenia Tree Project-ին միջոցով, Զուարթնոցի եւ Սարդարապատի մէջ: Տիկին Ղարիբեան անդրադարձաւ նաեւ նոր ծրագիրներու եւ կարեւորեց իւրաքանչիւր աշակերտի ներդրումը Հայաստանը կանաչապատելու օգտակար ծրագիրին:

Annual Elementary Christmas Recital
Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade participated in the annual Christmas recital on the morning of Tuesday, December 9. Each year, Ms. Arus Andreassian organizes this popular and beloved school event. Our talented youth performed a medley of Christmas songs and uplifted the audience's Christmas spirit. Performers were well-prepared and filled with excitement, and this resulted in their giving wonderful performances. The enthusiastic audience consisted of parents, teachers, and fellow classmates. It was a great experience for everyone involved. Needless to say, they made our school community proud. The students are anxiously waiting for their next recital, which will take place some time in the spring. Congratulations to all--we thank Ms. Andreassian for her patience and dedication!

Random Acts of Kindness
"Random Acts of Kindness" focuses on the qualities of empathy, generosity, and goodness, without expecting anything in return. Our elementary students have been participating in “The Random Acts of Kindness” project to promote kindness at school, at home, and in their community. During the months of January and February, students will be involved in school activities and projects to promote kindness by translating good intentions into actions. When they do something nice and kind for others, they feel good about themselves. Currently, our elementary students are participating in a “Kindness Tree Project”. Each time a kind act is performed or witnessed, a note is placed in a bucket called “Have You Filled Your Bucket Yet,” along with an ornament on a Christmas tree as a symbol of that kind act. We are proud to see that our students are excited about showing empathy, care, and kindness to one other.
To reinforce what your child is learning at school, please talk about the importance of kindness and generosity. We can all help students learn that each act, no matter how small, makes a difference and contributes to the betterment of our world.

Returning from a restful, refreshing Christmas break, we welcome our teachers and students back as they get into their academic routines. The school year has been momentous thus far, and we anticipate more excitement and academic milestones during 2015. John Kayacan's Photography to be Displayed at "100 Years of Denial"
John Kayacan, a graduating senior this year, has already built up a reputation for his photography, having won awards and being featured on many websites. We are proud to announce that fifteen of his photos, some of which he took in Armenia and others he took with the approaching Genocide Centennial date in mind, will be showcased at the Anne Frank Museum/Center for Education in Frankfurt Germany. He is the youngest artist to participate in the exhibit, "100 Years of Denial," which will open on February 11. This project was made possible with the cooperation of the Central Council of Armenians in Germany. Our school community will get a chance to view these photos at our on-campus Visual & Performing Arts department series of events in April. We are excited to support and recognize John's talent and dedication as a young artist.

American Heart Association Educates our Elementary Students
Our school is proud to partner with the American Heart Association through Hoops & Jump Rope For Heart! This community service project teaches our students the importance of heart health (exercise, nutrition, and living tobacco free) while having a great time shooting hoops. Students also have the opportunity to raise funds for the American Heart Association to conduct research and produce educational materials to lower the risks of America’s #1 and #4 killers: heart disease and stroke.
